Congestion Chaos: IT Issues Disrupt DP World Operations

Share

We regret to inform you that the Port of Melbourne is currently experiencing significant delays due to an IT system issue at DP World’s West Swanson Terminal (WST). The issue, which began last weekend after a Terminal Operating System (TOS) upgrade, has caused widespread landside congestion, impacting freight movements across the port.

Current Situation:

Truck turnaround times at DP World WST have drastically increased. As a result, transport operators are working additional shifts and trying to secure more Vehicle Booking System (VBS) slots to manage deliveries. These efforts are leading to higher operational costs and delays in freight delivery.

The congestion has extended throughout the Swanson Precinct, with severe road blockages on Intermodal Way—a single-lane connection that has been overwhelmed by the traffic. This situation has been compounded by ongoing lane restrictions on Footscray Road due to the West Gate Tunnel Project, forcing more trucks onto Intermodal Way and causing further delays.

These issues have impacted other terminals in the precinct, including Patrick East Swanson Terminal (ESD), where some trucks have been unable to return to their depots due to the gridlock. Recovery from this disruption will take several days as operators attempt to manage both delayed and new shipments.

Weather and Vessel Schedule Disruptions:

Recent high winds in Melbourne and Sydney have further aggravated the situation, leading to vessel schedule disruptions and “vessel bunching” at the port.

National Impact:

We are also seeing ripple effects across the country. Yesterday, DP World’s IT issues extended to their terminals in Brisbane, Sydney, and Fremantle, where operations were temporarily halted. This has led to delays at all major ports, affecting the entire supply chain.

Next Steps:

We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to work with transport operators and port authorities to minimize the impact on your shipments. However, please expect potential delays in the coming days as operators work to clear the backlog and manage incoming freight.

We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate these challenges. If you have any questions or concerns about your shipments, please do not hesitate to reach out to your account representative for further information.
